The First Teaser for TOY STORY 4 Is Here

They might be kid’s movies about talking playthings, but Toy Story has always dealt with complex, mature themes like friendship, family, loss, mortality, and acceptance with incredible depth and nuance. Hell, Toy Story 3 forced us to watch Woody, Buzz, and the gang literally face death. And based on the first teaser for Toy Story 4, things are only going to get more complicated when an all new character faces an existential crisis over what makes something a toy.

A fun dance featuring all of the major returning characters quickly turns into a disaster when we meet Forky, whom Pixar describes as “a spork-turned-craft-project” who doesn’t think he qualifies as a toy and would like to be left out of the gang’s newest adventure. Based on the synopsis with this teaser it looks like the toys will be hitting the road yet again with an unwilling Forky in tow.

“Woody has always been confident about his place in the world and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. But when Bonnie adds a reluctant new toy called ‘Forky’ to her room, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy.”

We always thought Toy Story 3 was a perfect ending for the franchise, but Forky’s so unique he raises a ton of amazing questions we can’t wait to explore. What defines a toy? When do toys “come to life”? Does a child’s love give birth to them? What do those answers mean for us? What defines our existence: birth or our purpose?

That might sound as much like a philosophy class as it does a kid’s movie, but that’s what has always made Toy Story great. What other movie series could turn a spork into a deep conversation about existence?

Toy Story 4 comes to theaters June 21, 2019.
