Totoro Stars in an Impressive Stop-Motion Makeup Video

No matter how cute and cuddly anything is, rest assured that adding Totoro to it will make it cuter and cuddlier—that’s just science. When it comes to Anime makeup competitions, then, Totoro is a good bet.

All you makeup enthusiasts out there may be familiar with the NYX Face Awards, a competition meant to cull the next great Beauty Vlogger from the backchannels of Youtube. From April through August, makeup artists participate in a series of themed challenges and various rounds of voting, hoping to make the Top 30 and, eventually, to be the Beauty Vlogger of the Year.

Contestants, as judge and former winner Adelaine (aka C0OK1EMONSTER) explains with so much enthusiasm, are judged based on “overall production value, their content, innovation, and instructional quality.” The 2016 contest has been narrowed down to a Top 20 and given their third challenge: Anime. One particular entry chose to focus on Totoro, which obviously caught our attention.

As the video opens (with a Studio Ghibli-esque emblem no less!), we see Youtuber pompberry apply makeup to her face when, all of a sudden, she’s surprised by our good friend, Totoro. Everyone’s favorite neighbor appears from behind pompberry’s right arm and crawls across her chest in brilliant stop motion. From there, Totoro invokes Mother Nature, as he does, and grows a bunch of trees and colorful plants all over her chest. Rain falls from her face. Susuwatari creep one by one until they overwhelm the scene. It’s pretty damn impressive.

pompberry then explains how she concocted the Totoro sketch and drew it on herself over and over again using various styles of makeup. The stop-motion portion of the video is only 35 seconds long, but it took her over 60 hours to make. That’s dedication.

You can vote for pompberry–or anyone else that floats your boat–three times a day per email from now until June 24. You know who we’re voting for. Who’s your pick?
