TOTORO Grilled Cheese Will Put a Smile on Your Face

Break out the bread, cheese, and butter, for National Grilled Cheese Day is upon us! Sure, those are the basics of your average grilled cheese sandwich, but why not take it above and beyond? Put a smile on your face by adding flavor, finesse, and a whole lot of Miyazaki magic.

Food blogger Steph from cooks up mouth-watering creations at I Am A Food Blog and when she decided to make a grilled cheese lunch, she turned her toasty treat into an edible Totoro.

Totoro’s fuzzy gray fur is replaced with golden brown toast, but his signature white belly still exists in the form of brie cheese. Let’s face it: why WOULDN’T Totoro be made of cheese? He makes the best companion and you want to be around him all the time… just like cheese. Cheese lovers know what I’m talking about.

Much like the animated character, this scrumptiously cute forest spirit is so much more than he appears to be. The bread used is a Japanese shokupan, which is an ultra-soft milk bread that crisps up perfectly. Totoro’s fluffy insides are then created with a combination of pepper-jack and cheddar cheese, all shredded to make sure they are extra melty when they hit the pan. This savory sandwich brings the heat because on top of the cheese is an entire layer of sliced jalapeños. If Totoro wanted to make his presence known, that’d do it.

You can’t have a cheesy bento lunch without an adorable face and his is made with hand cut seaweed eyes to bring out all those uniquely Totoro details.

Could you bear to eat this cheesy Totoro? Let us know in the comments and tag @nerdist and @justjenn on Twitter to tell us how you’re celebrating #GrilledCheeseDay!
