Last season on The Flash, Harrison Wells a.k.a. the Reverse-Flash was the mortal enemy of Barry Allen (Grant Gustin). But this season, The Flash will have to face Zoom!
Horror icon Tony Todd has been cast as the voice of Zoom in The Flash Season 2. The true identity of Zoom will be a closely guarded secret throughout the second season. And while Todd wonât be physically appearing as Zoom, his character is the new big bad of the show.
“Part of the mystery of the season is who or what is underneath the Zoom outfit, and so we wanted to do something like James Earl Jones as Darth Vader — this iconic voice coming out of this mask,” explained executive producer Andrew Kreisberg. “Last year, we thought of the Reverse-Flash as a speed warrior; this year, Zoom is like a speed demon, and no one does demon-voice better than Tony Todd.”
Kreisberg also revealed that Zoom has a deeper motivation to menace Barry Allen and his growing circle of speedster heroes.
âFor us, the best villains are the ones who donât have megalomaniacal âI want to rule the worldâ motivations,â said Kreisberg. âZoom has a very similar, personal goal this season⦠simple and easy to understand, and very primal. And just as with Wells last year, Zoom doesnât care who gets hurt or what gets destroyed in the service of him getting his goal.â
In DC’s comic book universe, Zoom was Hunter Zolomon, a Central City police officer who gained time travel powers after Wally West (the third Flash) refused to help him prevent the incident that crippled him. As Zoom, Zolomon was obsessed with making The Flash a better hero by forcing him to endure tragedies.
The Flash Season 2 will premiere on Tuesday, October 6, on The CW. Todd will make his debut as the voice of Zoom in the second episode of the season.
