TOMB RAIDER Reboot Officially Franchise’s Highest-Selling Installment

It looks like Crystal Dynamics just set a high bar for their upcoming Xbox One timed-exclusive Rise of the Tomb Raider, as Square Enix just announced today that its 2013 predecessor, the Tomb Raider reboot, is now the highest-selling installment in the franchise’s history, with 8.5 million copies sold. The Tomb Raider series had already sold well over 40 million copies since it came onto the scene in 1996 on the PC, PlayStation, and the Sega Saturn (a.k.a. the best damn game system of all time).

Considering that these numbers include last year’s remastered versions of the Tomb Raider reboot, and looking at the overall growth of gaming in general, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that Lara Croft’s makeover was able to garner so much success. Now, one has to wonder whether or not Rise of the Tomb Raider will be able to do even half as much as this numbers-wise, given Crystal Dynamics’ current timed-exclusivity deal with Microsoft, and Uncharted 4 on the horizon.

Oh, Lara! You’ve come such a long way from those pointy-chested, heavily pixelated, daisy duke-wearing days of locking your butler, Winston, in your refrigerator. It almost makes me want to shed a tear. My little bae’s all grown up!

Was the Tomb Raider reboot your favorite experience in the franchise? Is there a Tomb Raider game that you hold in higher regard? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.
