Tom Hiddleston Sings Hank Williams’ ‘Move It On Over’ in New I SAW THE LIGHT Clip

I Saw The Light, the Tom Hiddleston-starring biopic of country music legend Hank Williams, is set to make its global premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) tomorrow night, but ahead of that, we have a new clip from the movie of Hiddleston performing Williams’ 1947 breakout single “Move It On Over”.

Now, we have never doubted Hiddleston’s ability in any field of life–especially in playing Norse god comic book villains–but his resemblance to Williams, both visually and aurally, is almost jarring and a testament to Hiddleston’s skill and dedication to the role. After watching the clip above, listen to Williams’ original recording of the song, below:

Unreal, right? TIFF’s Piers Handling seems to think so, as he called the performance “revelatory:” “I Saw the Light is a celebration of musical genius, but also a poignant illustration of a restless soul who left a trail of heartache and fractured relationships. Hiddleston’s revelatory work is bolstered by a brilliant cast, in particular [Elizabeth] Olsen and [Maddie] Hasson, who embody the pain of women who, in their own ways, were as complicated and damaged as the man they loved.”

Maybe this clip will win over Hank Williams III, grandson of the original Hank Williams: after seeing Hiddleston perform the song around this time last year, he shared a video of himself performing the song and wrote, “Here is how you do it TOM ,You got no Moan Or Soul In your voice.”

Williams III later went on to say, “To do a Hank Williams movie the way it should be done you need certain aspects in the mix to make right. It goes way beyond having [an] American to play the role of Hiram Hank Williams, Sr. for it to be somewhat natural, [it] needs to be [an] American from the South who has eat lived and breathed these kind of roles before to make more respectable movie on Hank Sr.”

We’re not sure why the sour grapes, but Hiddleston’s performance won’t get any grief from us.
