Tom Hardy’s 1999 Rap Mixtape is Bananas…and Great?

If you’re a Tom Hardy fan, you may recall that, some years ago, he confessed to having tried to make a go of it as a rapper. Apparently he was good enough to get a recording deal, though nothing ultimately came of his efforts — the music he recorded never saw the light of day, and seemed likely to stay that way.

But not all is lost. Though Hardy has gone viral for rapping before, it looks like we may finally be getting the real goods. A mixtape entitled Falling on Your Arse in 1999 has found its way to Bandcamp courtesy of Edward Tracy, who produced the tracks under the nickname “Eddie Too Tall.” (Tracy is currently a writer and director, and won a BAFTA in 2008 for Fonejacker.) Meanwhile, Hardy, going by “Tommy No. 1,” burns through a total of 18 tracks without breaking a sweat. While the mixtape, which according to the Bandcamp blurb was “made in a bedroom 1999” and “never really finished,” is a little rough, the songs themselves are impressively groovy, featuring samples of jazz tracks as well as film scores.

Why the world has chosen to grace us with this album now, nobody yet knows, but far be it from us to complain. And given that just one mixtape isn’t exactly the “loads of stuff” he said he’s recorded, maybe there’s a little more listening material on the horizon. In the meanwhile, take a listen and see what you think.
