Tom Hanks IS Walt Disney in the New “Saving Mr. Banks” Trailer

Oh, friends, prepare yourselves to be delighted. The first trailer for the film version of the true story of when Walt Disney tried to convince Mrs. P.L. Travers to let him adapt Mary Poppins has arrived like a nanny in the wind. In Saving Mr. Banks, Disney (Tom Hanks) and Travers (Emma Thompson) could not be more dissimilar, but they are forced to eventually see eye to eye on the project, which of course went on to be one of Walt Disney Pictures’ biggest hits, being nominated for 13 Oscars and winning 5.

A good portion of it was actually filmed IN Disneyland, and that, in itself, makes it worth seeing, but I’m particularly pleased with Jason Schwartzman and B.J. Novak as the Sherman Brothers, who won two Oscars for the movie. Saving Mr. Banks has a plum December 13th release date, and I, for one, am very excited to see it.

What do you think? Are you enchanted by seeing Disney days of yore? Tell us in the comments below!

Nomination Oscar for Emma Thompson. Other probable nomination: best picture, director, actor in a supporting role (Tom Hanks), screenplay, art direction, costume, editing and original score.

  8. CJ says:

I hope the film makers CGI everything modern era Disneyland out of this picture (ie if you look carefully in this trailer? You can see Carsland / DCA in the background) or else its going to be distracting (yeah, this includes not filming in New Orleans Square, since that part of the theme park didn’t even exist!) …

Mary Poppins was the first movie I ever saw in a theater, and it’s still one of my all-time favorites. It’s the only movie I keep buying the re-re-re-releases of on DVD for the new interviews and additional footage. This trailer made me tear up too.

I loved the stories I had heard about P. L. Travers insisting that things had to be a certain way in the movie, such has needing to include the tape measure scene. She also hated the idea of the father tearing up the children’s nanny advertisement, because she felt that a father would never throw away his children’s creations like that. It looks like the movie may shed some more light on the reasons behind that.

  12. Rose Tyler says:

That is so strange, because I have always thought of a movie about Walt Disney, but not with Tom Hanks playing Disney. However, I hope Tom does a good job with the film. And I hope he plays Disney with the respect and dignity I know he should be played with.

First we had the Disney Family Museum in San Francisco telling the story of Walt and the Family and the creation of the studios. I can’t wait to see how they further develop the stories of the production studio and the way it was all done.

  15. Jeremy says:

Mary Poppins is one of my favorite movies of all time. I mean like, top 5 or 10. When I was a toddler I watched near every single day (probably driving my folks nuts). Today I still watch it as often as I can. It makes my heart soar. This movie, Saving Mr. Banks, has me extremely excited and I really can’t wait to see it. Everyone involved are just wonderful. I’ve heard the story is a little softer on the lengths as to which Poppins is different from the book, but I don’t care. This had a slight bit of moisture in my eye and I can’t wait to see it. Now I need to go put on a DVD.

I was actually at Disneyland when they were filming the carousal scene! They had that whole are blocked off. I may see this movie just because of that.
