Tom Hanks Helped a Fan Propose to His Girlfriend

A wedding proposal might seem like the ultimate moment between two people, but that doesn’t mean it can’t benefit from the involvement of a third party… especially if that third party is Tom Hanks. Case in point: This past Saturday, when the Oscar-winner assisted a fan in popping the question to his girlfriend in the most spectacular way.

Via Vulture, Hanks was at Austin’s Texas Book Festival this past weekend to promote his new collection of short stories Uncommon Type: Some Stories. During a Q&A session with the audience he suddenly stopped in the middle and said he had enough of answering their questions—a clear sign something special was about to happen, since Tom Hanks would never earnestly shut down his fans like that. Instead, he told them he was going to let Ryan McFarling, who was sitting in the crowd, ask the likewise present Nikki Young a question of his own. That’s when McFarling got down on one knee and asked her to marry him.

Based on the photos from the moment she was totally shocked by what happened, probably both because she wasn’t expecting to the proposal and also because Tom Hanks was involved. Thankfully, she said yes. And when the two came up to the stage they got a hug and well wishes from Hanks himself.

People get engaged every day in meaningful and creative ways, and it’s a wonderful, exciting, and memorable moment in their lives together. But obviously the best proposals involve Tom Hanks. Just like everything else in life.
