Todd Howard Explains Character Building in FALLOUT 4

We’ve recently had the luxury of learning about the importance of S.P.E.C.I.A.L. (Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck) stats through the awesome animated video series. Now, you can learn more about character building in a different manner. Bethesda released a video today featuring none-other than Todd Howard explaining the character system included in Fallout 4. It’s not very long, but it packs a whole lot of information that will be of use for any player. Peep the short above.

A lot of time will be spent shaping your character based on the way you choose to allocate your character stats, making it imperative that you know how to spread points out to yield the outcome that best suits your play style.

Here’s the skinny: early on you’ll have to choose a value to give to your SPECIALS from 1-10, with only 28 points to distribute. You can spread those out however you’d like and even give one stat the max 10 if you want. The danger of going this route is abandoning other important stats that could be crucial to your survival.

Each rank of your SPECIALS from 1-10 has a perk assigned to it. These perks can be leveled up as well, which in itself acts like a mini-skill tree. There are 70 base perks, with each SPECIAL including 10. Those perks then include ranks in them so the number inflates to over 270.

Bethesda also mentioned that leveling up will be experience points-based like Fallout 3, but you’ll be leveling up a lot quicker, similar to how it worked in Skyrim.

The last bit of the update includes a nice surprise for people who will be pre-ordering a physical copy of Fallout 4. Those that choose to go this route will receive a perk poster alongside their purchase.

Having so many options available ensures that each player will be able have their own unique experience. I’m also loving these videos, because it will make it so much easier to dive into the game without having to worry about learning all the complex systems during the first few days. Are these videos helping you understand what to expect come November 10? What kind of character are you planning on building? Let us know in the comments below.
