Toast Climate Change With This Grim Reminder Cocktail

A mixologist in Manhattan has worked up a cocktail to remind the patrons at World Bar, a New York City hot spot for those immediately associated with the United Nations, that the climate is changing so much faster than Earth can handle.

In case you missed the news last weekend, the People’s Climate March, it was a big deal. Here’s an image to give you an idea of the kind of worldwide attention that people are paying to the issue of climate change.

Every little orange dot on this map represents a city that held its own People’s Climate March last weekend. In New York City, where the new cocktail of climate change is being served to the delegates of the United Nations and their staffs, more than 400k people showed up to protest the continuing disregard of the changing climate and marched through Manhattan. There’s solid evidence that we are heating the planet up unbelievably fast and are very close to reaching a “point of no return” in terms of the damage that burning coal and oil are doing to the atmosphere.

Steven Dragun is the mixologist at World Bar who thought up the sizzling cocktail. It starts off cool but then becomes something completely different with a “hot and polluted” finish, as Dragun told The New York Times. The drink includes Montenegro Amaro liqueur (herbal), Auchentoshan American Oak Scotch, Combier crème de cassis liqueur (subtly tart and sweet berries), lemon juice, blackberries and an orange twist. Oh and fire! Yes! The way that Dragun makes this cocktail includes some fire-play that sprays caramelized orange juices over the surface of the drink! It sounds kind of like a party trick, but this writer is kind of dying to see it. I may have to go check it out next time I’m feeling righteous about the state of the world. Until then, I’m going to see how many jokes about a drink that involves fire and was created by a guy with the last name Dragun I can come up with that revolve around dragons.
