Part of what I love the most about getting into Doctor Who is that I could hop around and check out different Doctors as I went, discovering different styles of acting and storytelling. Since it’s a time travel show, it doesn’t necessarily have to be viewed in chronological order â especially in its earlier iteration. Titan Comics are really taking that baton and running with it since they launched their ongoing series a year ago, beginning with the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors and eventually adding the Twelfth and a limited Ninth Doctor series. And now? They’ve added Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor to their slate.
The five-issue miniseries will see the Eighth Doctor go on separate yet interlocking adventures surrounding the mystery of his new companion, Josie. There will be “Victorian magic shows, murderous trees, lost books, crystalline life-forms, barges in space crammed with the undead… and the grand journey all begins in a sleepy Welsh town… besieged by living paintings!” Sounds pretty exciting, I’d say.
The series will be written by George Mann, author of the bestselling Doctor Who novel Engines of War, and with art by Emma Vieceli. The first issue premieres October 28th.
The Eighth Doctor only appeared in a single TV movie in 1996, but since then has grown to be one of the most popular Doctors, owed in no small part to the 14-years of Big Finish audio adventures that have been coming out steadily, giving him more stories than any other Doctor. He was finally given his moment to shine in the New Series when he appeared in the 50th Anniversary prequel “Night of the Doctor” wherein it was revealed he regenerated into the War Doctor in the early days of the Time War.
Below you’ll find a gallery of three variant covers of the first issue: one is the now-familiar Alice X. Zhang portrait used for all the Doctors, one is a photo cover, and the other features art by Warren Pleece. There will also be a fourth variant that is a blank sketch cover, if that’s your thing.
