Tiny Cities Inside Glass Tubes Belong in a GHIBLI Movie

Micro Matter is a stunning art collection created by freelance designer, art director, and animator Rosa de Jong. The title says it all — working on a nearly microscopic level, she’s created sections of cities and scenery inside of small glass tubes. These miniaturized tubescapes look like they belong in One Piece or Studio Ghibli’s Laputa: Castle in the Sky.

How does she do it? Well, it’s a bit like making a ship in a glass bottle. The tiny handmade buildings are put together using natural elements such as sticks and tree bark. Some of these structures are no bigger than the palm of your hand, but each one is given special details such as windows, cracks, and paneling. Using tweezers, they are later carefully placed inside of a small glass tube. We would not have the patience necessary to craft these little floating islands as precisely as de Jong has.

The collection has also made us think of Bioshock Infinite‘s floating city, Columbia. Except with the individual pieces from Micro Matter, a more simplistic, almost obsolete life is revealed. Along with our gallery below, you can see more from this ongoing project and others like by visiting Rosa de Jong’s Instagram, Behance, and website.
