Tilda Swinton Confirms She Is The Ancient One in DOCTOR STRANGE

The Sorcerer Supreme is here!

Back in May, actress Tilda Swinton was rumored to be in talks with Marvel Studios about playing the Ancient One, the mentor of the title character in Doctor Strange. In a recent interview, Swinton confirmed that she has officially joined the movie in that role. “It’s done,” said Swinton. “We’re so far in talks that we’re not talking anymore [laughs]. It’s done. The conversation has been had.”

The Ancient One was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1963 as a key player in Dr. Strange’s origin story. As originally conceived, the Ancient One was a Tibetan male who served as the Marvel Universe’s Sorcerer Supreme for many years before Doctor Strange took over the role. For the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Ancient One was re-envisioned as a woman.

“I just really liked the premise of this and the idea of playing this character,” related Swinton. “I’m a Marvel fan and I think this particular world that Doctor Strange goes into is really, really, really exciting… The idea of playing The Ancient One is really just too tickling. I can’t say no to that!”

Among genre fans, Swinton may be best known for her roles in Only Lovers Left Alive (pictured above), DC’s Constantine movie, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Snowpiercer. She also won the Supporting Actress Academy Award for her part in Michael Clayton and she was nominated for Golden Globes as a lead actress for both The Deep End and We Need to Talk About Kevin.

Marvel’s Doctor Strange will be directed by Scott Derrickson, with Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo. True Detective Season 2 star Rachel McAdams has been rumored for the female lead in Doctor Strange, but the specific role that McAdams is up for has not been revealed. That said, we think she’d be a terrific Clea!

Doctor Strange will be released on November 4, 2016.
