THE 100 Showrunner Talks [Spoiler]’s Death and the Arkadia Blockade

If you haven’t watched last week’s game-changing episode of The 100, “Thirteen,” turn back now. Avert your eyes. We’re talking huge spoilers below …

A week has passed since The 100 killed off fan-favorite Commander Lexa (Alyica Debnam-Carey), and emotions are still running high from that heartbreaking, gut-wrenching loss. Thankfully, The CW’s post-apocalyptic drama is giving all of us another week to cool off by taking a break from everything happening in Polis.

Because “Thirteen” didn’t touch on any of the happenings in Arkadia, tonight’s episode “Terms and Condition” will focus entirely on that storyline. Civil war is brewing now that Pike (Michael Beach) is using his position as Chancellor to wage an unnecessary war on the Grounders even after they reached a peaceful truce. Kane (Henry Ian Cusick) is leading the resistance in the shadows with help from Octavia (Marie Avgeropoulos) and Abby (Paige Turco), while Bellamy (Bob Morley) and Monty (Chris Larkin) have unfortunately and infuriatingly sided with Pike.

Before her death, Lexa ordered a blockade to be put in place around Arkadia’s borders, trapping them all inside a five-mile perimeter, away from the lands they need to farm more food. Lexa hoped that containing the Skaikru would give them time to overthrow Pike on their own and rejoin her coalition. But now that she’s dead and a new Commander is about to ascend, what does that mean for the blockade?

The 100

“It is a world that does not have smartphones in everyone’s pockets, so the news of Lexa’s death will not have arrived in Arkadia instantly,” executive producer Jason Rothenberg tells Nerdist. “That blockade is still in place. Even the people that are a part of that blockade won’t necessarily know about Lexa’s death for a little while.”

Rothenberg was excited to get the chance to focus the entire episode on the goings on in Arkadia, especially now that it’s gotten so complicated (to the point where as Kane spies on Pike, Pike is now spying on Kane). But how will the blockade affect the people living inside Arkadia?

“We will see the events play out in Arkadia as to how they react to the fact that there is a blockade,” Rothenberg promises. “Will they take out Pike from within? [This] is what Lexa was hoping, per Clarke’s [Eliza Taylor] advice, will happen.”

Bellamy has so far supported Pike and carried out his orders, even when he didn’t completely agree with them (like murdering every single one of the Grounders who were sent to help protect Arkadia from Azgeda). But with Pike suddenly turning his attention to their own people in hopes of finding out who is spying on him, will Bellamy finally switch sides?

The 100

“How far will Bellamy go down that path of supporting Pike’s leadership when it takes an inward turn?” Rothenberg says. “Suddenly, in Arkadia, they’re looking for spies, like Kane. How far will Bellamy go when Pike is turning his attention on his own people? You’ll start to see that play out in this episode.”

As for Murphy (Richard Harmon) and Clarke, the two Skaikru refugees are still in Polis, while the blockade is about to go into affect. Where do they stand now that Lexa’s dead? Will they return to Arkadia or stay in Polis to watch the ascension of the new Commander?

“Murphy, of course, wants to survive,” Rothenberg says. “His story has taken him to the heart of the bigger story that we’re telling this season. He’s the reluctant hero in many ways now. Clarke is going to have to compartmentalize her heartbreak over the loss of the woman that she loved and figure out a way to move forward to save her people yet again. There is going to be a conclave and whoever wins that conclave is either going to be an ally of Skaikru or an enemy. She is going to have to try to figure out how to affect that, if possible. We will see all of that playing out going forward.”
