Thor: Ragnarok is going to send its title character up against some seriously powerful enemies including Hela, Skurge the Executioner, the Grandmaster, Surtur, and of course, Loki himself. (It’s a good thing that Thor has a Hulk!) But what if all of this was simply the undercard for an even bigger main event? Well, Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi posted an image on Instagram that may be a joke. Or it could be the key to everything about Thor and Hulk’s story in the film.

Could it be that Thor’s quest to find the Infinity Stones before Thanos may be the driving narrative of this movie? It makes a lot of sense given the last time we saw Thor in Avengers: Age of Ultron, when he was launching his own investigation into the sudden reappearance of so many Infinity Stones in a short period of time. It’s also worth noting that Odin clearly had an Infinity Gauntlet in his vault during the first Thor film, but Thanos had an Infinity Gauntlet of his own in the post-credits Age of Ultron scene.
Pitting Thanos against both Thor and Hulk—and letting him emerge victorious—would go a long way towards establishing his character in the minds of the casual comic book movie fan. We’re pretty sure that Thanos is coming to Earth in Avengers: Infinity War. And he will be a lot more intimidating if he’s already taken out two of Earth’s mightiest heroes on his own dark quest for ultimate power.
The image that Waititi posted was from the very amusing Thor short that was screened at Comic-Con, so it may simply be an amusing misdirection. After all, there’s currently no indication that Josh Brolin will reprise his role as Thanos in Thor: Ragnarok. That said, it’s a very good theory and we wouldn’t bet against it!
