This Week at NerdMelt Theater!

September is almost here! We’ve already broken out our light sweaters in anticipation, not to mention the week of excellent week of shows we’ve broken out for you to check out here at the theater!

Friday at 8:00 is IMPRO(vs)TANDUP!

IMPRO(vs)TANDUP brings the best improvisers and stand-up comedians together for one incredible show. Watch improvisers and stand ups do what they do best and then switch it up and try their hand at what the other does best. And best of all, the audience determines which discipline wins the night, improv or stand up.
Hosted by Christian Spicer (Weekend Confirmed, Double Jump) and Rajan Dharni (PBS, Eleanor)! Featuring improv team Heather & Miles (Record setting 29-0 UCB Cagematch champs)
vs. stand up comedians Guy Branum (Chelsea Lately, X-Play), Nicholas Rutherford (Good Neighbor), & Michael Kosta (Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Conan, Comedy Central Presents)!

Watch Heather & Miles perform some gold-standard long form improv and Guy, Nicholas, and Michael bring the heat with their best sets… then watch them reverse roles as they compete to take home the night’s championship.

Top comics are given a never-before-seen “setlist”of strange and outrageous topics the second they walk onstage, and perform seamlessly as if its the act they normally do, while the audience follows their list on the projection screen. Sunday at 5:00 is The Nerdist Writers Panel!

The Nerdist Writers Panel series is an informal chat moderated by Ben Blacker (co-creator of Thrilling Adventure Hour; writer for Supah Ninjas, Supernatural among others) with professional writers about the process and business of writing. Covering TV, film, comic books, music, novels, and any other kind of writing about which you care to hear.

August 26th, join us for the Why Aren’t More People Talking About These Great Shows?! panel featuring Lauren Iungerich (creator, Awkward.) and David Hudgins (Friday Night Lights; Parenthood).

Matt Mira of the Nerdist Podcast needs a Day Off, so we decided to give him Sundays at Nerdist Theater. Come watch Mira and Paul Cibis host this comedy free-for-all. You’ll see brand new comics, comics you know and love trying out new material (Chris Hardwick and Kumail Nanjiani are frequent drop ins), and the magic that is live comedy.

Monday at 8:00 is Harmontown!

Yup, that’s right, it’s weekly! Attend a town meeting in a land free of brevity, where Mayor Dan Harmon (creator of Community) and Comptroller Jeff B. Davis (Whose Line is it Anyway) take another small, vodka-soaked step toward colonizing the moon. Evening may include ineffectual rants, songs, shameful stories, special guests (Allison Brie, Donald Glover, and Gillian Jacobs have all stopped in), forehead sweat and repeated exposure to the phrases “like” , “uh”, “sort of” and “you know.”

$10!

Tuesday at 8:00 is Beauty is Embarrassing!

In anticipation for the release of Beauty is Embarrassing on September 7th at the brand new Sundance Cinemas, L.A. landmark Nerdist Theater at Meltdown Comics will host an evening with artist Wayne White, director Neil Berkeley and special moderator Rob Schrab, for a one-night-only show about comics, art, creativity, inspiration and finding your inner-artist. These themes and more are the foundation for the new film, coming to L.A., New York, and Seattle on September 7th.

Rob, Wayne and Neil will look at clips from the film, Wayne’s own art and anything else that might sneak its way into the mix, and provide you with an evening that will likely leave you wanting to grab whatever pen/pencil/paint brush/hacksaw you can find and start creating.

The night will be an amazing, and more importantly, fun discussion, in learning about what art “is” and why you should never take yourself too seriously.

$8 in advance, $10 at the door!

Wednesday at 8:30 is The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail!

This week, Jonah Ray and Kumail Nanjiani host Rory Scovel, Jeff Klinger, Jenny Slate, Eli Olsberg, Jay Chandrasekhar, Sean Patton, and Greg Behrendt.

Thursday at 8:00 is Risk! Storytelling Show!

RISK! is the show where people tell true stories they never thought they’d dare to share in public– stories they’d normally only tell to close friends. At the RISK! Live shows, the brightest stars of TV, film and literature drop their usual act and show a side of themselves you’ve never seen before.  August’s topic, “Impulse”, will be touched upon these great storytellers: Mo Fathelbab (NerdMelt Theatre, The Mutant Season, NerdTerns), Helen Hong (Setup Squad), Danny Lobell (Real Talk with Danny Lobell), Taylor Orci (UCB Theatre, The Grid), R. Ben Garant (Reno 911) and a story by each of our awesome hosts Kumail Nanjiani and Pete Holmes!
