This Unreleased RED DEAD REDEMPTION Song Is Weirdly Soothing

Last month, Rockstar Games made the long-awaited announcement that Red Dead Redemption 2 is finally on the way, with a release set for fall 2017. We’re still not entirely sure how the new game will tie into the original Red Dead Redemption, but now we have a new song to listen to while we remember our glory days with former outlaw, John Marston.

Via Polygon, Animal Collective has released “Mountain Game,” a song that was created for Red Dead Redemption. According to the band’s YouTube page, its’ “an unreleased track we recorded in 2010 for Red Dead Redemption and it never got used.” For just over the first minute, “Mountain Game” sounds like a tune that could have been played while exploring the vast open world of the first game. But after the vocals come in, it seems like it may have been a better fit for the end credits of the game. Some of the lyrics do evoke Marston’s personal journey over the course of the game, and the changes that he experienced through his life. But it’s not a typical western song, and that may be why it ultimately wasn’t included.

Animal Collective picked a good time to set this song free into the wild, as the sequel news has once again revitalized interest in the Red Dead franchise. We’d even love to hear what the band would come up with if given the chance to revisit this world one more time.
