This Japanese DESTINY: THE TAKEN KING Commercial is a Perfectly Bonkers Recruitment Drive

The Taken King, the first major expansion to last year’s highly anticipated Bungie release, Destiny, will be hitting shelves and download cues this coming Tuesday, and is offering players a chance to reunite their best fire teams and battle the darkness again.

This wildly amazing Japanese advertisement for the Sony PlayStation 4 release of the game seems to be playing off of just how much the game pushes for team-play and the fun of cooperative missions to truly get the most out of the Destiny experience. The video opens with two friends waiting to meet a third at a laundromat, they are greeted by a man dressed in some awesome-looking Guardian armor from the game. It turns out to be their friend who, upon revealing himself, delivers a very intense and hilariously over-the-top pitch to convince his friends that they need to play Destiny with him so they can stop The Darkness from destroying humanity.

The commercial is tongue-in-cheek gold that offers an anime-style performance from the Guardian friend as he makes his own sound effects, dances around the laundromat, poses, mugs, and even yells into washing machines while convincing his friends to join in his fight. Alongside the recent Box Wedding commercial for Metal Gear Solid V, the Japanese marketing teams for these video game franchises have been hitting it out of the park. I feel like a game such as Destiny, that has proved itself more popular as a fun shooter than as an intense or epic story actually benefits more from a kooky advertisement such as this. How do you think it compares to the recent live-action English advertisement? Let us know in the comments below.
