When apocalypses happen in movies, the action tends only to focus on what happens or happened to the larger metropolises. You’ve got your New Yorks, your Londons, your Moscows and the like, but they almost completely ignore the smaller, more rural areas. There’s probably a lot of weird stuff going on with people in Kansas or the middle of the Australian Outback, or, and I think you know where I’m going with this, Ethiopia. Yeah, Ethiopia can be affected by alien invasions and robot wars and the like too, and probably they’d handle it a bit different. A lot different, actually.
In the trailer for Crumbs, the first Ethopian post-apocalyptic science fiction film, we see a world that’s equal parts quirky and creepy. Our two main characters, Birdy and Candy, live in a broken-down bowling alley (that somehow works on its own), a dilapidated spaceship hangs in the sky, a knight with a plastic helmet rides a horse, a sword floats through space, Santa Claus whacks people in the head, and there even looks like there’s a mouse dressed like a member of the National Socialist Party. It’s a thing to behold.
Written and directed by Spanish-born, Addis Ababa-based director Miguel Llansó, Crumbs debuted at the Rotterdam Film Festival last year where it confused some and delighted others. It’s just been picked up for US distribution by IndiePix, which means we are soon going to be able to see just what the sweet chocolate Christ is actually happening.
Does this vision of the end of the world look appealing to you? Let’s talk about it below!

You stupid idiot, go to hell! Ethiopia is a cradle of humanity, an ancient civilization and now one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Go and see how that country is being transformed.
