These Pancake-Making Robots Will Be Our Overlords One Day

If everything you know about Japanese cooking you’ve learned from crazy game shows or Iron Chef, then there are times when it seems like those are frighteningly true to life. After all, here on Nerdist we’ve covered how to make dumplings in three seconds flat with a wall of fire, bathing in ramen noodles, and the ultimate in internet controversy, the infamous Water Cake.

In today’s Japanese culinary adventure news, we take a look at a pair of robots that make pancakes. It’s odd how that headline doesn’t even phase me anymore. Inventor Koto Yamada took it upon himself to solve a seemingly unsolvable problem: wouldn’t pancakes taste better if made by humanoid robots? Yamada created a pair of small robot chefs to make pancakes for Maker Faire Tokyo 2015. Robots. Pancakes. Got it. However after watching the video I have so many more questions…

What’s up with their eyebrows? Do the exaggerated eyebrows help with the cooking process? Was it weird shopping in the kid’s clothing section knowing those outfits would be used for robots? Why do the robot’s flamethrower hands not burn up his little chef’s hat? Most importantly, why, oh why, wasn’t the griddle greased before the batter was poured? Oh the humanity!

There may never be answers to my many, many questions, but one thing is for sure — robots making pancakes that look exactly like versions of themselves is a harbinger of their inevitable world domination. Soylent green pancakes are made of robots…robots!

Would you rather eat pancakes made by robots or humans? Let us know your allegiance in the comments!
