There’s a New Animated GARFIELD Movie In the Works

It’s been ten years since the last Garfield movie hit theaters, and it may be time for Jim Davis’ iconic fat cat to get some cinematic redemption! Earlier this week, Alcon Entertainment announced that is producing a new Garfield movie that will be fully animated in CG.

Despicable Me and The Angry Birds Movie producer John Cohen and Steven P. Wegner are behind the latest attempt to bring Garfield back to the big screen, with Davis attached as an executive producer. In the announcement (via ComingSoon), Alcon noted that the company wants Garfield to become an animated franchise, which suggests that sequels would follow the reboot film.

Davis’ Garfield newspaper strip debuted in 1978 and it quickly became a worldwide hit. Garfield has a long history in animation that includes 12 TV specials, the Garfield and Friends series, three direct-to-video movies, and Cartoon Network’s The Garfield Show. The first two Garfield theatrical movies used a CGI animated Garfield with Bill Murray as the voice of the title character.

Murray has made a running joke out of his displeasure with the first Garfield movie, including a throwaway gag during his Zombieland cameo. Critics and some fans were also less than pleased with that depiction of Garfield. How can the new Garfield movie avoid that ridicule? It’s easy. Just keep Garfield true to his original character. The original movies tried to make Garfield into something that he wasn’t, almost to the point of Poochie-fying him. And please, no break-dancing Garfield this time!

And speaking of strange movie news, could a Nintendo cinematic universe be happening?
