If you’re a fan of The X-Files, then it’s hard not to think of that haunting opening theme music by Mark Snow. Series creator Chris Carter originally envisioned The X-Files as more of anthology series like The Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Therefore, it’s fitting that the music for The X-Files has become just as iconic as the themes for the shows that inspired it.

The X-Files theme’s signature whistle was actually just a synthesized keyboard effect. And as Snow related on The X-Files Season 1 DVD set, the echo effect in the theme was another keyboard element that was originally added by mistake.

Earlier this month, musician Ian Gordon released his cover of Snow’s X-Files theme with one major difference: it’s in a Major Key instead of a Minor Key. The result is a more sunny piece of music that sounds like it should be opening a comedy television series instead of a genre drama.

Gordon (a.k.a. Muted Vocal on YouTube) previously put out an excerpt from The X-Files in a Major Key as part of his 5 Horror TV and Movie Themes in a Major Key that he released in May. That video also included Gordon’s take on the themes from Halloween, Saw, The Exorcist, and A Nightmare on Elm Street.

As for the original X-Files theme, perhaps Snow will give it an update as part of the upcoming six-episode revival miniseries of The X-Files that will premiere on Fox on Sunday, January 24, 2016.
