THE WITCHER 3 Gets a Card Game; Adds Swag To Xbox One Collector’s Edition

Hey, the folks behind The Witcher 3 would like you to know that the action RPG will have its hero Geralt doing more than slaying monsters and getting tangled up in inter-kingdom conflicts – he’ll also be able to play collectible card battling games!

Developer CD Projekt Red announced late last week the inclusion of Gwent, a card battling game which sees the studio trying to capture some of that Heartstone heat with The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. In the game’s fiction, Gwent is a card battling game created by the dwarves, involving two armies and four factions – each with their own hero cards – vying for control of a tabletop battlefield. Each faction will feature its own combat style across 150 unique cards, some of which will include spells to alter units and manipulate the weather.

CD Projekt Red promises that Gwent will be “embedded” in The Witcher 3 experience, so I’m guessing it’ll pop up at some of the taverns and camps in Geralt’s travels. It’s also going to be a real-world card game, with two Gwent card packs making their way into the Xbox One Collector’s Edition of The Wild Hunt.

The console-exclusive card decks will be joined by a ton of other swag when the game is released next February. In addition to the cards and a copy of the game, the set will also include a steelbook case, the soundtrack, a world map, Witcher Universe – The Compendium book, a Polystone statue of Geralt fighting a griffin, a 200-page art book, and a box to store all of this stuff in.

You’ll be able to lug all of this back to your den of gaming when The Witcher 3 is released for the Xbox One, PS4, and PC on February 24, 2015.
