THE WALKING DEAD Theme Gets an ’80s Synth Cover

Spawned from the beloved comic by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard, The Walking Dead has remained one of the country’s most popular television series over the span of its seven-and-counting years on air. One of the elements that has made The Walking Dead such a phenomenon is its music, particularly Bear McCreary‘s atmospheric opening theme, which sets the mood better than just about any other current program’s introductory number. Now, thanks to one talented fan, McCreary’s opening theme has received an unexpected synthwave cover, and it gives us the ’80s-style Walking Dead that we never knew we wanted!

We first spotted this cover at ComicBook.com, and it was created by YouTube user GentleBruce. It’s an extended version of McCreary’s theme and it takes a few liberties with the tune. We’re also really taken by the Miami Vice-like colors and logo for the video. This series would have been radically different if it had been made in the ’80s, although now we really want to see Rick Grimes, Glenn Rhee, and Daryl Dixon dressed like Crockett, Tubbs, and Zito while taking out walkers.

If GentleBruce is feeling particularly ambitious, we’d be very curious to see and hear if he could cover this theme with ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, and ’90s remixes. It could be a lot of fun to explore the musical possibilities as well.
