THE WALKING DEAD Creator Robert Kirkman Reveals His New Apocalyptic Comic

New York Comic Con has only just begun, but we’ve already gotten word of major announcement out of the fest: The Walking Dead co-creator Robert Kirkman is working on a new comic book series called Oblivion Song, which he describes as “apocalypse-adjacent.” Kirkman’s co-creator on this project is Lorenzo de Felici, an Italian artist who will be making his debut in American comics with this book.

Via Entertainment Weekly, Kirkman revealed that the premise of Oblivion Song revolves around a disaster in Philadelphia that sent 300,000 people into a hellish alternate dimension known as Oblivion. The series picks up a decade after that event, as a man named Nathan Cole continues his quest to rescue the survivors long past the point when nearly everyone else gave up on them. Oblivion Song will be an ongoing series, and the creative team has already completed several issues to avoid any delays.

Kirkman described the new project to People TV at NYCC: “It’s not horror. It’s not superheroes. It’s definitely a version of science fiction … Tonally, I think it’s possibly a little less depressing than Walking Dead can get at times. And it’s probably not quite as fun Invincible can get at its most fun.”

Given Kirkman’s track record with The Walking Dead and Outcast, we wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Oblivion Song also become a TV series. Last month, Kirkman signed a development deal with Amazon, and this new comic book series could very well be one of the first shows that comes out of that.

Oblivion Song #1 will be released on Wednesday, March 7, 2018.
