THE WALKING DEAD Renewed for Season 8 and More TV News

All the things got renewed over the weekend, and by all the things, I mean three series—including The Walking Dead. Get the scoop on the other two series in today’s TV-Cap along with intel on new cast members for Stranger Things’ second season, Amazon’s new Studio Ghibli series, and more.

The Undead Keep Kicking. The Walking Dead will be back for season seven on October 23, but in news that surprises no one, AMC has already given season 8 the greenlight. They dropped the announcement during a Walking Dead special that aired on Sunday. They also announced The Talking Dead will be back for the next season. [Deadline]

Get Frightened. It’s the season for being scared, and if you’re looking for television to make you jump, Kyle A. has some recommendations for you. He’s put together a list of the seven most terrifying episodes of The Twilight Zone. Go make a safe blanket fort to hide in, and then check out the list here at Nerdist.

Renewals, Ahoy! The Walking Dead wasn’t the only series to recently land an order for another season. Syfy has given the go-ahead to a 13-episode second season for Van Helsing. Over at MTV, Scream will get a shortened six-episode third season. [Deadline and TVLine]

A Little Nod. Kevin Smith is directing an episode of Supergirl in season two, and he took to Instagram to reveal the title: “Supergirl Lives.” The name appears to be a reference to the Superman film he penned, called Superman Lives. That was the one set to be directed by Tim Burton with Nicholas Cage in the starring role as the red-caped hero. [CBR]

Stranger Additions. Season two of Stranger Things has found two new cast members. Sadie Sink and Dacre Montgomery have been brought on board as series regulars; Sink will play Max and Montgomery is set to play Max’s step-brother Billy. Also, existing cast members Joe Kerry and Noah Schnapp have been bumped up to series regulars for the second season. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Ghibli on Amazon. Studio Ghibli isn’t releasing its own feature films anymore, but they’re still working on new projects and Amazon’s nabbed one of them. They’ve picked up a television project called Ronja the Robber’s Daughter. It’s a 26 part animated story about a “girl who grows up exploring a beautiful and dangerous forest filled with mythical creatures.” Heck. Yes. And Amazon has Gillian Anderson tied to this English-speaking version of the project as the narrator. [Nerdist]

Short Stories. In the category of weird developments I need to share: The CW is launching a weekly scripted comedy on Instagram Stories. Yep. JoJo Head debuted on October 16; the Instagram Story series features vignettes about Johanna Stein’s life in one-two minute episodes. The 18-episode series is also available more permanently on CW Seed. The Insta Story is really a way to get viewers interested and will hopefully entice them to hop over to CW Seed to see more. Fans Speak Up. If you want to see the broad spectrum of humanity condensed in an interesting way, look at the available petitions on Change.org. The documents range from quite serious topics to things like asking Disney to make a television series based on Star Wars: The Old Republic. At this time, almost 75,000 supporters want Disney and Lucasfilm to turn back the clock to thousands of years before Episode IV and make a series in that era for Netflix. You can read the full petition at Change.org. [Slashfilm]

From Deadites to Robots. Weekends sometimes end up being way busier than we want, and it means you don’t get to devote all your attention to your favorite TV shows. So, relive a couple of ’em with Scott’s recap of the latest Westworld and Blair’s look at the most recent Ash vs. Evil Dead.

Any speculation for the new cast members of Stranger Things? Dish in the comments.
