It’s probably a good thing that this incredible DIY R2-D2 bus only physically exists in Porto Alegre, Brazil, because if it was here in the US, I would want to empty my savings account in an effort just to travel to it and be photographed beside it. César Aguzzoli shared his immense DIY project on Instructables.com, and while the process is intense and detailed, the outcome is galactically awesome.

Below is a gallery of the big steps in the transformation process, but Aguzzoli goes into incredible detail with photos, graphs, and equipment descriptions in his 16-step guide to turning your VW Bus into an R2-D2 replica. There were a lot of things to consider, including how to orient the design, how exactly to apply it, and what would need to happen to the bus before they could do everyone’s favorite droid justice.

As he details in the final pages, the bus is still in Brazil (where VW continued manufacturing the classic vehicle for 30 years) and is not completely finished to his satisfaction, but he’s already talking about the possibility of creating one in the States now that he’s living in California. If that happens, you can absolutely bet that Star Wars fans will flock to be driven around in the sassy droid or at least to see it – this writer included.
