Jim Gordon said it himself, it’s a “new day” in Gotham. From the looks of the above trailer, “new” doesn’t exactly mean “happy.”
That’s because the villains of the city that eventually spawns the Dark Knight are starting their rise to power. The thirty second spot showed a good majority of the “Rogues Gallery” that will be putting Gordon and the GCPD through their paces this season. Returning are Oswald (Robin Lord Taylor), Cat (Camren Bicondova), and Edward (Cory Michael Smith). We also caught glimpses of Jerome Valeska (Cameron Monaghan), who will (possibly) eventually become Batman’s greatest enemy, The Joker. James Frain joins the cast this season as Theo Galavan, brother to Tigress, played by Jessica Lucas. Barbara Kean (Erin Richards) is also returning and looks to be more of a thorn in Gordon’s side, rather than a partner in crime.
A few months ago, I wrote about how Gotham was taking the Batman mythos and putting it in reverse, making it so Batman was the result of the villains. This trailer is showing this direction is definitely where they are headed. This is a good thing, as it will give the viewer a sense of direction as to where the show wants to go, something that season one was missing.
Gotham, starring Ben McKenzie and Donal Logue, premieres Monday, September 21 on Fox.
