The Vampire Diaries is constantly redefining what a love story looks like. From Stelena to Delena to Klaroline to Forwood to Defan to Denzo to Bonenzo, there are so many different kinds of relationships being formed between humans, vampires, werewolves, witches and hybrids. Hey, there was even a romantic arc between a human and a ghost (Anna and Jeremy, #neverforget).
So when Steroline, a.k.a. Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline (Candice Accola King) finally acted on their seasons-long teased chemistry, fans thought TVD would finally tell a normal relationship story, albeit between two vampires, of friends who started off as platonic and grew into something more.
But that all went out the window when it was revealed in the last episode that not only is Stefan dealing with his first love Valerie (Elizabeth Blackmore) coming back into his life, but she was also pregnant with his child over 100 years ago, until Julian (Todd Lasance) beat her and she lost the baby. As if that wasn’t enough drama for Steroline to overcome, now they have to deal with the fact that the Gemini coven magically transferred Jo’s (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe) twins into Caroline before Jo was murdered. If you’re keeping score, that means Caroline is now carrying Alaric’s (Matt Davis) babies. And let’s not forget that in the flash forwards, three years from now Caroline and Alaric are engaged.
Talk about awkward. So what does this mean for Steroline in the present? Are they doomed?
“I donât want to say terrible things [are coming],” Wesley told us on set. “I just shot a nice scene with Caroline. But Stefan was super into Valerie back in the day. He said that he was not interested in her anymore but I don’t know. I think there’s still a semblance and there’s still a thing that he has for her. There’s trouble ahead for [Steroline].”
But both Wesley and King promise that despite all the troubles Steroline has to overcome, there will be a proper Steroline date on TVD.
“The episode I just directed, they have a date and it goes really sour,” Wesley says with a laugh. “They go on a real date. They definitely do.”
“We are going to see Caroline and Stefan want to do the things they haven’t really done at this point, like go on a normal date, which doesn’t go as planned,” King told Nerdist on set. “We are going to notice that that is a pattern with these two, that any sort of normalcy â beyond the supernatural forces â in their relationship, it’s just nonexistent at this point.”
And the lack of “normalcy” will actually lead both Caroline and Stefan to question if they’re doing the right thing in fighting for their relationship.
“Caroline and Stefan, it seems like every time they take two steps forward, there’s a giant leap back in their relationship,” King says. “When two people have to work really, really hard just to accomplish the simple, easy parts of what a relationship should or could be, is it really worth it? Beyond supernatural road blocks, per se, they’re having a difficulty finding any sort of normalcy in their relationship.”
