The TRANSCENDENCE Trailer Will Make You Think Twice About AI

If you enjoy a bit of anxiety about the potential future of humanity, or have a crippling fear of artificial intelligence gone sentient, allow us to introduce you to Transcendence. The film, directed by acclaimed cinematographer Wally Pfister in his first-ever helming endeavor, had a second trailer unveiled Tuesday, and the results evoke a cautionary tale and struggle for survival that stresses us out just thinking about it.

Starring Johnny Depp as esteemed artificial intelligence researcher Dr. Will Caster, Transcendence follows his journey from man to machine (sorta). Following a irreparable injury at the hands of an anti-technology group, Will’s wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, decide to upload Will’s brain waves into the sentient machine he’d been building — housing the collective intelligence of humanity from the beginning of time. With the whole of knowledge and human emotions under his belt, the Will-machine greedily evolves on his quest towards singularity and ultimately, transcendence, including all the good and bad that sort of need of power. (Only it’s a human so you can’t kill it so easily — no big deal!) The film also stars Morgan Freeman.

A first trailer — far less foreboding in nature — was released Monday following the teaser trailer that appeared back in December.

And, because we’re completionists, here’s the poster that Warner Bros. revealed over Twitter:

Transcendence opens April 18, 2014.

Are you looking forward to Transcendence? Scared? Excited? Throwing up with fear about the future? Let us know in the comments.
