The TOMB RAIDER Reboot Has a New Director

It’s been 12 years since the last Lara Croft: Tomb Raider movie,—an eternity by modern Hollywood standards. But it appears that Lara Croft will actually escape development hell, as a director has been signed for the Tomb Raider live-action reboot.

GK Films have chosen Norwegian director Roar Uthaug to helm the Tomb Raider reboot, which will also be Uthaug’s English language debut as a director, his most recent film being the well-regarded disaster epic, The Wave. The new Tomb Raider movie will be distributed by Warner Bros. and MGM. Transformers 5 writer, Geneva Robertson-Dworet, is in early talks to write the new Tomb Raider’s script.

While story details are largely under wraps, the new film will reportedly depict Lara Croft’s first adventure, but it’s not clear if the movie will be based on the 2013 Tomb Raider video game that rebooted the franchise and revitalized Lara Croft’s image. Earlier drafts for the new Tomb Raider movie were written by Evan Daugherty, Marti Noxon, Mark Fergus, and Hawk Ostby.

Angelina Jolie previously starred as Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider movie that was released in 2001. Jolie reprised her role in 2003 for Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, but that film’s disappointing reception at the box office doomed any immediate sequels. The current iteration of the Tomb Raider movie has been in development since 2011.
