  1. Spencer says:

Though they don’t offend me, rape jokes are pretty offensive to some people Todd. Can’t make a big deal about ‘gay’ while joking about your engineer getting punched in the pink while in the clink. I STILL LOVE YOU YOU DISINGENUOUS FUCK!

  2. Spencer says:

I totally thought of that before I heard PFT say it.

  3. Spencer says:

    How about the Todd-Glast?

  4. Emile says:

One extra thing…a way to fight the word gay as an insult is to just call people on it.
    “You are so gay”
“So you’re saying that you don’t like something about me or what I’m doing, and it reminds you of the thing that you don’t like about gay people?”
    “…”
“So what do you have against gay people?”

  5. Emile says:

Great show, wanted to add one extra argument regarding whether the word for gay would just change if we shun / ban it.

It is absolutely correct (bear with me, I turn this around), and the same thing happens in other groups, like people with intellectual disabilities, a term that has evolved in political correctness from one well-meaning descriptive clinical term to another, that then gets corrupted into an insult. For example, well-meaning French clergymen used to refer to them as Cretins (meaning Christians) to indicate that they had souls and should be treated with humanity. This was turned into an insult, and was replaced with a scientific term, “Moron”, and so on. As you can see, banning or changing the word is not a fix in itself. On the other hand, it represents a sincere effort made by people to reduce the damage that is done by people who take a word that describes a group of people and use it as an insult.

That action is the problem, and it doesn’t matter what the word is or what group of people it describes. Once it is used as an insult, it communicates to members of that group that people believe there is something wrong with them. The old joke – “I would compare you unfavorably to X but that would be an insult to X”, is absolutely true. When we compare people to X as an insult, we insult X.

Some people do not give these issues the thought or care that they deserve and for their sake, and for the sake of the insulted groups, we go through the meaningless dance of changing PC terms around. Your commentor was right in pointing out that this is a band-aid. But it’s a band-aid that is needed because there is a wound. The long-term solution is for people to fix the cause of this wound- people carelessly insulting and denigrating groups of people with no concern for the consequences. In the short term; caring, well-meaning people can help to apply these band-aids and to educate the ignorant to minimize the wounds that are caused.

  6. Ben Black says:

    It’s the PodGlass, obviously.

  7. Jaime Kaplan says:

To finish a previous thought the ven diagram overlap theory is just a theory to explain the various “commenters” that you mentioned saying things about you being gay and having good taste. You’d have to actually quantify the lighting situation and poll a huge number of straight people and gay and map their genome and make some comparisons to see if theres actually scientifically any validity to it.

    Peace

  8. Jaime Kaplan says:

Hi guys love the show and your points of view. Light constructive criticism:

I’m not sure how well Todd understands evolution and it’s pretty simple and I think it would help his appreciation and understanding of the world which he is all about. Re: men being sexually aggressive and women being not being learned and not genetically ingrained. Things like that are both genetic and environmental.

In this particular case it has a lot to do with the fact that women have the physical burden of a child when sex is “successful” from a genetic standpoint, and men don’t, Not only do they not but they could theoretically impregnate many other women during that ones pregnancy.

Re: gay people and design taste. Could be some genetic element to it . There are so many genes affecting so many proteins in the human body that it’s pretty safe to say that there are genes that exist in the human gene pool that, if all other genes and societal upbringing are kept identical, will result in a shift in an incredible number of behaviors , skills, preferences, whatever. If you think about genes on this level there is certainly a reasonable chance that of the various genes that increase the chances of being gay, and the many various genes that increase the chances of having good taste in lighting at parties and comedy clubs, there is more of a ven diagram overlap thing going on than with the genes for straight people and good taste in lighting at parties and comedy clubs.

Hope I’m not coming across as a crazy science person that has anything against anyone. I recommend The Selfish Gene by Dawkins if you’re trying to learn about it.

  10. Eric says:

@Oprah Ha, you don’t know what that word means huh?

  11. Oprah says:

Couple of hacks hackin’ it up.

  12. Alex says:

There is nobody else on earth I’d rather listen to talk. I love to hear Todd Glass talk.

I’ve just started this episode, and I know there is some stuff I want to say already, so I’ve pushed pause and now-

    SOME STUFF:

I love that the subject of “Toddcast” as podcast title keeps coming up. Not sure if it’s been discussed, but there definitely is a well-known podcast called “Todcast” (one D). It’s probably not the first, but perhaps…the dude, Champion Snowboarder-Turned-Talk-About-Snowboarding Guy Todd Richards, is funny and well-known enough that it’s definitely his. And I do make the rules on that.

I am on Team Kinno. Solidly. I like that he is called a foreigner, like he’s fresh off a boat, even though I can’t hear even a hint of an accent myself.

The Todd Glass Show is my favorite thing. When I see there are two hours lined up of jingles, rambles, bingles and bangles?–I am truly happy. I know that, at least for those two hours, I can relax and know that I will be doing exactly what I want to do. I’m not a horribly depressed person, but I love the feeling I have right now: you motherfuckers out there in the world are going to try and harsh on me? You’re going to be jerks or dummies or whatever? Well listen here: I got two fucking hours of the fucking Todd Glass Show in my iPocket and I’m gonna fucking listen to it instead! Ha!

I saw Todd Glass perform at the Parlor Live in Bellevue a couple months ago. I chose the Thursday night show, thinking it would be the best: only one show, so there would be fewer time constraints; Thursday night might have a lower percentage of drunk maniacs and more people like me. I bet I was correct.
The show was great. I was in heaven. Todd Glass! He did this thing where he made a noise, and then he became a woman telling her friend about this comedian Todd Glass who just went on stage and made this noise, and then the other woman came to the club the next night and comedian Todd Glass didn’t make the noise and that made the first woman a liar. That was my favorite. It was as if the Todd Glass Show Podcast had escaped my brain (I only listen to podcasts on headphones, and they’re in my brain–I suggest you do the same). Awesome.
I wanted to tell Todd Glass how much I enjoyed the show afterwards, but the club routed me all weird out into a crowd of young people who made me uncomfortable and there was this other bar at the other end where I think comedian Todd Glass was, waiting for pot deliveries, and I saw a sign that was “PRIVATE PARTY” over there. The whole scene of meeting a performer after their show is weird and uncomfortable enough for me, so when the world added these other barriers in this weird place, I got scared and bolted.
So, to comedian Todd Glass, I say thanks for that show. Some guy said “boo” at swimming in ponds (very confusing), remember that guy? Weird. Strange club in a strange place. But I loved it. So great!

    What else?

    I guess that’s it.

  13. Glasscaster says:

I’ve been a loyal listener from day one and this podcast gets better and better each week. Todd continues to polish an already hilarious podcast and you can tell he is really working to make this podcast better each week. As always Paul F. Tompkins is hilarious while being both a gentleman and a scholar. I’d love to see more Glass-Tompkins collaboration. Blake Wexler is ten times funnier when angry, I’d love for that recurring bit to come back as well as for him to incorporate more of that into his stand up.

  14. Brad says:

As Paul F. Tompkins continues his elegant traversal of the podcast circuit, might we call it his kingly peregrination? He is unequivocally the “King of Podcasts” , forever may he reign.

  15. I would listen to Paul F. Tompkins read a french encyclopedia with every other word scratched out and still be entertained. Todd Glass is alright too.

  16. Mike Liang says:

Holy moly. This podcast keeps getting better and better. I’m already looking forward to Monday’s drop. Any chance Pete Holmes will be a guest in the near future?
