The Titanic II is Real and… What? Why? How?

You know the feeling: you see something go terribly wrong and—hindsight being what it is—consider all the ways in which you could’ve done it better. If only we were all as industrious as Clive Palmer to make it so. Of course we’re talking about the Titanic and the brand new boat Titanic II, a real idea someone had and spent a lot of money to bring to fruition. And it’s hitting the high seas in 2018! Because what could possibly be wrong about building an exact replica of a ship that laid home to one of the most horrific tragedies in maritime history? Especially when guests are asked to wear fancy period dress!

Draw me like one of your French girls—and by that I mean as a lady with a serious scowl fulla judgement (and maybe a cigarette). And here we thought that amusement park was bad.

Australian billionaire and lover of schadenfreude, Palmer, and his Blue Star Lines—yes, one in the same—will repeat history with this new liner, because nothing terrible ever happens when we ignore the cautionary tales of the past and bring a second iteration of the unsinkable (heh) ship to the seas. The company has gone to great lengths to recreate the details of the original ship that sunk on its way to New York in April 1912 and you can check out some comparison images from both ships in the gallery below.

And not only is it a visual doubletake of a re-do, passengers aboard the ship will also be given period costumes to wear while they laugh in the face of all the people who were lost, because caring about that sort of stuff in the name of fun! and money! is suuuuuuuch a drag.

This time, however, there will be enough lifeboats so that when this thing totally doesn’t sink into the ocean, Jack won’t have to sink into the watery depths because goddamn Rose went and let go. (Allegedly.)

So, for those of you unafraid of poking Mother Ocean with a steely bow, taunting her tides and whims, get excited: The maiden voyage will be from Jiangsu in Eastern China to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

Who’s down to board this ship of sadness? Let us know in the comments below.
