The Thermals, much like the currents of warm air that share the bandâs name, donât have much time for grandiloquence. They come, they rise, and then theyâre gone.
The Portland, Oregon trio specialize in quick hitting pop-punk that deals with love and love-related painâthey donât shy away from feelings. Today, Nerdist is premiering âThinking of You,â the latest track from the bandâs upcoming record, We Disappear, and itâs as direct as any in The Thermalsâ canon.
In the press release, âThinking of Youâ is described as “a bouncy, super-catchy blend of ’70s punk, ’80s pop, and classic Thermals new century angst.â That seems like a lot of different sounds to absorb, and youâll have less than two minutes to process everything. But thatâs ok, because The Thermalsâas alwaysâare masters of brevity.
âIâve been listening to the voice inside my head, wishing Iâd heard you instead,â sings Hutch Harris. âAnd when I thought about love, I was only thinking of us. When I thought of all the things I wanna do, I was only thinking of you.â
Itâs punchy and uplifting and full of regret, all at the same time. Itâs âone of the most straight-forward love songs weâve ever written, a point-blank post-break up song,â said Harrisâas included in the We Disappear bio courtesy of Kurt âK Ohleâ Braunohler (which is equal parts thoughtful and hilarious). âItâs a song that says exactly what it means.â
It really is, which makes âThinking of Youâ exceptionally relatable. Does it evoke any memories of love or love lost for you? Let us know in the comments, and check out We Disappear when it arrives on March 25.
