The Summer of ’69 Begins with MAD MEN Final Episodes Teaser

As the decade of love (ha ha ha) draws to a close on AMC’s flagship series, Mad Men, we don’t really know what the final seven episodes will hold. We’ve already had the moon landing, so the ultimate episodes will truly only span the latter six months of 1969. Creator Matthew Weiner has said many times that he never has intended the show to go into the 1970s, however, if we’re going by the new, typically-cryptic teaser for Season 7b, then it seems like the characters are all ready for the ’70s even if the show isn’t. Have a look.

According to Vulture’s Margaret Lyons, the song we hear, Diana Ross’ “Love Hangover,” was released in 1976, much later than the show seemingly would allow itself to take place. Also, everybody’s hair and garb smacks a lot more of the early ’70s than the late ’60s. Could we actually be going into the Me Decade and forsaking the rest of the Summer of Love? Or is this just yet another of Weiner’s teasers that get everybody thinking but don’t actually represent what the show’s going to depict. What would Mad Men in the ’70s have to tell us about our favorite characters?

One of my favorite things about the show has always been how Don Draper remains unchanged, at least physically, despite the styles and hair advances through the decade. Look how big Roger Sterling’s hair and mutton chops have gotten, but Don’s still cutting the sharp suit, the neatly Eisenhower-era’d hair, and not a bit of stubble. He’s remained the ’50s mentality of manhood even into the ’60s and, it would see, the ’70s too. A man truly out of time?

Let us know what you think about this teaser. Will the show really go to the 1970s or is it all just a ruse?

pete looks so creepy with that hair

  2. Laurie Mann says:

The trailer keeps jumping between late ’60s fashions and mid-70s fashions. Sally and Meghan in particular scream LATE ’60s. But the tiny clip showing Peter, he looks MUCH older and the pants scream mid-’70s. But, it’s really wrong for a hard-drinking, heavy-smoking man like Don to be almost unchanged over 16 years – that’s a serious mistake.

    Yummy! Can’t wait!

  4. BC says:

The clothes actually remind me more of the late ’60s photo-hip type worn by “squares” who wanted to be cool. I think we are looking at 1968-1969.

Pete’s hair appears to have receded way beyond what just a few months of even a year would normally could do.  So yeah, I wonder if this will be further into the future a bit.  Or perhaps just that clip is – it’s possible that the show will skip a few years at some point, though hard to do in 7 episodes.
