Now, this might be something you want to laugh at, but we urge you to refrain… HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! There seems to be a very real chance that Oscar winner and 30 Seconds to Mars front man Jared Leto will play Gotham’s craziest and most terrifying troublemaker, the Joker, in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, which of course was announced as the first in DC and Warner Bros’ line of shared-universe films to follow Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. The Joker was apparently not included in Justin Marks’ original draft of Suicide Squad, but Ayer is expected to do a rewrite that would wedge in the Clown Prince of Crime into the proceedings. Since Harley Quinn is in it, it only makes sense that Mr. J would show up at some point.
Jared Leto might not be what most people think of when they think of the Joker. That’s it. End of that sentence. He HAS, however, been trying to find his way into a superhero film to follow his Academy Award win earlier this year for Dallas Buyers Club. He was apparently very interested in starring in Marvel’s Doctor Strange, which supposedly is going to Benedict Cumberbatch, and since that didn’t happen, the actor has been talking with folks at the Double-You Bee.
If cast, Leto will be only the fourth actor to play the character in a live action feature, following Cesar Romero in 1966’s Batman: The Movie, Jack Nicholson in 1989’s Batman, and of course Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, which won him a posthumous Oscar in 2009. This will be the first time the character would appear in a feature film that doesn’t bear Batman’s name or moniker in the title, nor, we expect, him at all in the movie (although, probably Batfleck will have a cameo).
For our money, the best choice for the Joker would have been Michael Pitt, who basically auditioned for the role by playing the psychopathic Mason Verger in season two of NBC’s Hannibal. He’d have been FAN-TASTIC. Still, we mustn’t judge before anything actually happens, and Leto is a compelling and versatile actor, so he may very well be fantastic.
What do you think? Let us know if Leto’s the clown you want or if not, who WOULD you like to see at Batman’s purple-clad nemesis?
Alrighty, I’m hoping the right people read this. It’s been just over a week since I’ve read about this and to be brutally honest, Jared Leto would be the WORST choice imaginable to play the Joker after Heath Ledger’s amazing performance (that must be taken into account when casting this roll) and this isn”t just my opinion, but many others. It will be a very difficult roll to top, but I have come up with a few logical choices that should be looked at, if we’re looking for people around the same age as Leto, there’s David Tennant, who as we know from watching him as The Doctor can be a little crazy. There’s also Robert Knepper, who definitely looks the part. And if we’re looking for somebody younger, there’s Ben Foster, who in almost every roll he has ever played is that crazy guy. I have now given 3 better alternatives than Jared Leto, with logical reasons. It’s not that I discredit Jared Leto as an actor, I as a huge fan of Batman, just do not see him as the Joker, for myself and many others, it would ruin Batman.
And that’s all I have to say about that.
If take make leto the Joker I hope they make Jennifer connley Harley quinn
I think Leto is going knock this out of the park, he’s got the crazy factor and the all around skills. Give him the credit!
MICHEAL PITT!!!!!!!
cant belive they mentioned him by name in the article he would be fukin brilliant
Leto would do a great job as the Joker but for some reason, I’m more concerned about the prospect of Harley Quinn’s casting and I’m hoping they don’t mess that up.
Daniel Day Lewis in a movie of A Killing Joke or something along those lines would be awesome!
Though I think DDL should do it in a movie version. He would kill it in say A Killing Joke movie or something along those lines….
Daniel Day Lewis period.
Michael Pitt would be a good choice, but I second the suggestion of Crispin Glover. He should be at the top of that list.
Adrian Brody would have killed it… Leto is not bad at all though. Looking forward to him. The only worry is that he is another method actor… really gets into his roles. Would hate to lose another one.
It wasn’t the role of joker that killed heath, it was his sleeping disorder and seeing two different doctors that prescribed him two different medications that killed him.
I think he could do it, does no one remember him from fight club as the beautiful thing that got broken ?
I don’t recall that character really doing much, nor having many lines.
i think he’d be great! i’m going to be so excited if he does ~
adrian Brody or crispin glover
