David Chase is Making a THE SOPRANOS Prequel Movie

We may never get definitive word on whether Tony Soprano survived that infamously ambiguous finale, but there are plenty of other Sopranos questions we met yet receive the answers to. As it turns out, series creator David Chase has lined up a feature film prequel to his iconic HBO show, which will take place a in the crime world of Newark a few decades before we first met Tony and company.

Deadline broke the story about the Sopranos prequel, which is currently called The Many Saints of Newark. The name may ultimately change, but the story is said to take place in the ’60s and focus on the race wars between the Italian-American and black communities that enveloped the city at the time. That conflict will spill over into the criminal underworld that Sopranos fans should find familiar.

The report states that some of the characters from the original series could appear in the movie, including Tony’s uncle Junior as well as Tony’s mother, Livia Soprano. Tony’s father, Giovanni “Johnny Boy” Soprano, also seems likely to appear, since he was the captain of the Sopranos crime family in the ’60s. Although we suspect a cameo from young Tony is also a strong possibility.

Chase co-wrote the script for the prequel movie with Lawrence Konner, a veteran writer from The Sopranos. The movie is set to be produced by New Line, and Chase will be directly involved in the search for a director; at this point, it seems unlikely Chase will direct it himself. There’s no projected start date for this project, but it could come together quickly now that the deal is in place.
