The Smiths Sound Downright Happy in 8-Bit Chiptune Covers Compilation

The Smiths have gone down as the ultimate gang of sad boys in U.K. music history, but they don’t get enough credit for being upbeat: We defy you to listen to “This Charming Man” and not dance, or at least crack a wry smile. Well it turns out that The Smiths sound even more jovial when covered in the chiptune style.

HIPSTERDISCO has released two compilations, about a half hour in total, of The Smiths chiptune covers, and the whole affair is gorgeously old school.

HIPSTERDISCO didn’t actually create the songs himself, but he compiled the mix. We’ll let this pass — DJ Khaled shouts his name on a bunch of songs, and it’s not entirely clear what he actually does…besides shout his name in songs. Curation can be artistic too, we suppose. Anyway, listen to the first compilation above, and the second below:

We actually gave props to the included “This Charming Man” cover a few years ago, and there’s plenty more 8-bit goodness beyond it. Check out the tracklist below to see if your favorite Smiths jam was included, and let us know in the comments if there are any glaring oversights here.

The Smiths: 8-bit tracklist

1. “This Charming Man”
2. “There is a Light That Never Goes Out”
3. “William, It Was Really Nothing”
4. “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now”

The Smiths: 8-bit Volume II tracklist
