BIG HERO 6’s Baymax Becomes Terrifying When He Fills in for THE SHINING’s Jack Torrance

It’s hard to think of two characters more polar opposite than Big Hero 6‘s lovable healthcare robot Baymax and The Shining‘s deranged Jack Torrance, especially since one tries to save lives and the other tries to end them with an axe in the back. But it turns out even the sweetest character can lose his mind when he spends some time in The Overlook Hotel, because all work and no play makes Baymax a dull… large white thing.

30 Rock‘s Scott Adsit, the voice of the beloved caregiver from Big Hero 6, joined host Rob Paulsen on our Alpha series Talkin’ Toons, and the two read the scene from Stanley Kubrick’s classic horror film when Jack menaces his wife about bothering him when he’s working. Rob filled in for Wendy, and Scott took over for Jack with his very calm and soft-spoken Baymax. Believe it or not, that same soothing voice sounds so unhinged and dangerous in this context.

It’s always amazing hearing the unexpected ways these classic movie scenes both change and stay the same when played by a totally different character, but what’s particularly cool about this one is that by making Jack Torrance a cool-headed, unstable robot, we created a mini-Kubrick homage to another one of his iconic characters, Hal 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

To see the rest of Rob’s interview with Scott and other full episodes of Talkin’ Toons, pop over to our online Alpha community. It’s just one of our many great shows there, and if you’re not already signed up, your first 30 days are free when you join. And why wouldn’t you want to get in on the fun? You know what all work and no play does to even the sweetest robots.

What other horror icon would Baymax make terrifying in a totally different way? Tell us your best ideas in the comments below.
