This week’s Shelf has some zombies, some aliens, a whole lot of car chases, and three, count ’em, THREE giveaways! What is this, Christmas time? No! It’s the beginning of June and we’re just awesome.
Die Hard might be the movie I’ve seen more than any movie ever. Perhaps more than Back to the Future or Star Wars, which I watched a TON when I was younger. The reason is because I’ve watched it every Christmas for probably 12 years running, plus all the times I watched it not at Christmas. As such, because John McClane is such an integral character to my life, any time a new one comes out, I’m gonna see it. This one, the fifth, takes McClane (played by the never-not-cool Bruce Willis) to Moscow where he tries to find his son Jack (Jai Courtney) whom he thinks is in trouble. Turns out, though, that Jack’s a CIA operative trying to foil a Russian terrorist ring. Nuclear weapons are involved. What’ll stop it? Two McClanes with guns! Man, these movies are awesome.

The penultimate eight episodes of one of televisions best and darkest dramas (though there are certainly many of them these days) comes to Blu-ray and DVD as we all get ready for the final eight, likely very bleak, episodes to air in August. This season had Walter White go even further off the deep end. After having made it to the top of the meth heap, he attempts to rekindle things with Skyler, who, it has to be said, is not super into that idea. His relationship with Jesse goes from tenuous to bad after a tense and impressive train heist ends tragically. Walt Jr. eats breakfast. Everything is happening.
There are TONS of special features on this release. There are fewer episodes, but the extras almost make up for it. There are commentaries, shortened making-ofs that accompany every episode, a featurette about the show’s directors, the same with the writers, and deleted scenes. There’s also the episode of Chris Hardwick’s All Star Celebrity Bowling that features the BB cast.

A kid with a weird hat runs around a magical land with a talking, shape-changing magic dog and attempts to defend a bunch of talking confections against vampire queens and Ice Kings and gnomes and crap… This was a concept pitched to a network. And it’s AWESOME: one of the weirdest, strangely-terrifying, hilarious, and enjoyable shows on TV. Jake the Dog and Finn the Human are the best of friends, and they love adventuring. That’s what it means to be a kid. The first two seasons of the popular cartoon are now out on Blu-ray with a whole bunch of extras. Really, there’s nothing quite as great as 52 episodes of off-the-wall insanity.

Mad Max Trilogy – And speaking of road movies, the three Ozploitation classics about post-apocalyptic gas-shortage-spawned crazy people starring Mel Gibson come to Blu-ray in a handy three-pack. The Road Warrior is by far the best of them, but the other two are fun as well.
