The Secret of J.J. Abrams’ STRANGER Teaser Revealed

Last month, we posted a very strange and intriguing teaser trailer that was being bandied about as J.J. Abrams’ next project, supposedly called Stranger. Was it a movie? Was it a TV show? We could only speculate. This morning, the above trailer surfaced which offered a reverse glimpse at the first video plus some more intriguing bits of not-information, including someone typing on a typewriter about things that should not be investigated, and some investigators looking through this man’s apartment.

Again, it was very cryptic and stark and creepy, and at the end the website www.soonyouwillknow.com came up, which was eagerly visited by yours truly. What did I find? A book. Yes, it seems this very effective teaser campaign was to flag up Abrams and award-winning writer Doug Dorst’s new novel, entitled S., available October 29th. There’s already an audiobook version as well. Evidently, this 472 page tome will feature notes in the margins by other people who have supposedly read the book, which will make for a layered mystery of what’s going on. Abrams is involved, so it’ll likely be full of twists and turns and, I don’t know, like polar bear or something.

What do you think of this marketing campaign? Are you disappointed in the apparent result? Let us know in the comments below.

  1. Eric,

That is the best comment I have seen in a long time. Kuddos! But you know he will try anyway! 🙂

  2. Eric says:

At least he can’t pack a book full of lens flare.

  3. Carol says:

That is a great way to market ANY product! I for one am a avid book reader – please note that I said ‘book’ and therefore read paper bound together with words written on them. Can’t wait for it!

  4. Stephanie says:

If you listen again, the voiceover says, “The book is just the beginning.” I’m guessing there’s already a movie/tv follow up planned…sequel? prequel? Something but with Abrams involved, you gotta guess it’s not likely to stop at a book!

  5. I was hoping this had something to do with the Pronunciation Book Youtube channel.

  6. Andrew says:

I’ve never heard of a “creator” credit on a book.

  7. CJ says:

get people away from the screen and get them back to reading (I prefer real books vs ebooks) 🙂

  8. Jeff says:

We’ll see if Abrams can write better endings with a partner….

  9. Jared says:

    DAMN RIGHT, Thea!!!

  10. Thea says:

Disappointed? Nope! Because F**K-YEAH-BOOKS! Super excited!
