The Rolling Stones Will Play a Concert in Cuba for the First Time Ever

Legendary British rock band, the Rolling Stones, have announced that they are going to play a free show, entitled “Concert for Amity,” in Havana, Cuba on Friday, March 25. It will be the first open air concert in the country by a British rock band, and will take place at the Ciudad Deportiva de la Habana. The concert will be added onto the Stones’ America Latina Ole tour, which began in early February in Santiago, Chile.

In a joint statement, the Stones’ said:  “We have performed in many special places during our long career but this show in Havana is going to be a landmark event for us, and, we hope, for all our friends in Cuba too.”

The Fundashon Bon Intenshon (the foundation for good intention), an organization that “initiates and supports international charitable projects in the fields of education, athletics, cultural literacy, healthcare and tourism” is the organization behind the free concert, and is putting on the show on behalf of the island of Curaçao. Curaçao, if you’re unfamiliar, is a tiny island off the Venezuelan coast that apparently loves itself some classic rock.

While there have been big foreign acts that have played Cuba in the past—including those involved in the 1979 Havana Jam—according to the Associated Press, the “Rolling Stones [will be] the biggest act to perform in Cuba since the country’s 1959 revolution,” which stifled the proliferation of rock music in the country, as well as relations with the U.S.

What do you think about the Rolling Stones putting on a free show in Cuba? Is the idea giving you “Satisfaction,” or is it making you feel some “Doom And Gloom”? Let us know in the comments section below!
