The Riddler Rises on GOTHAM! (Exclusive)

As one villain falls, another one rises on Gotham.

While the first-ever female Firefly, Bridgit Pike (Michelle Veintimilla), is currently rotting away with fireproof skin in a division of Wayne Enterprises, another supervillain is poised to become Gotham city’s greatest threat yet. And no, we’re not talking about the Joker. We’ve already gone through that roller coaster of emotions once this season! (RIP Jerome, we hardly knew you.) And no, we’re not talking about Mr. Freeze. (Although he’s also set to make his chilly debut.)

After accidentally killing the love of his life Kristen Kringle (Chelsea Spack) in this week’s episode, “Rise of the Villains: By Fire,” Edward Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) is about to take up his DC Comics alter ego: The Riddler.

That’s right, get ready for all the brain teasers and jokes and question marked clues you can handle, because Gotham is finally giving us The Riddler storyline we’ve been waiting for since the pilot first aired, and Nerdist has your exclusive first look at his first victim: himself!

After Nygma’s date with Kristen turned deadly — he tried to brag about how he killed her abusive ex-boyfriend, but she, naturally, freaked out at the idea of sleeping with a cold-blooded murderer and tried to leave, so he strangled her … by accident. Just your normal, run-of-the-mill accidental murder. Oops? — it looks like he decided to sleep on the situation before making his next move. Hey, nothing like a good night’s rest to help give you clarity on how to cover up a murder, right?

But when Nygma wakes up the next morning, Kristen’s body is gone … because his dangerous alter ego, The Riddler, took matters into his own (their own?) hands. Despite the fact that Nygma thought he banished his other half for good when he started dating Kristen, he’s back in full force, and decided to hijack Nygma’s body during the night. Because The Riddler knew his softer side would want to turn himself in, he hid Kristen’s body and left himself some clues for finding it.

The first clue leads Nygma to none other than the GCPD, because what’s more fun than leading a murderer right into the heart of the city’s police department when trying to find the victim’s body? The Riddler has one messed-up sense of humor, because if Nygma doesn’t find the body soon, someone else will. Uh oh!

How amazing is it seeing Smith finally portraying the DC supervillain he’s been fated to play since he first signed? It’s clear he’s having fun in these scenes, and now that Nygma has killed the only woman who he loved and has ever loved him, we’re in for a lot more of these split-personality scenes. Maybe we’ll even get to see moments when The Riddler is in “the driver’s seat” of Nygma’s body? Now that would be a good time.

Gotham airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on Fox.
