In the world of Rick and Morty, our beloved protagonists have access to a infinite amount of universes. That means that literally anything is possible: A universe where humanity is made entirely of Laffy Taffy, a universe where everything is exactly the same but Morty has a unibrow, or a universe where Rick and Morty go to the reality seen in SpongeBob SquarePants. Those will probably never happen in the show, but now we at least know how things will play out if Misters Sanchez and Smith did pay a visit to Bikini Bottom. Rick and Morty‘s creators recently sat down with Vulture and improvised a mini episode crossing over their characters with the world of SpongeBob. It’s pretty nuts.
Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon had no interest in actually talking to SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Sandy, or any of the traditional Bikini Bottom gang. They instead spend their time in the “SpongeBob Universe Show” traversing parts of “Sponge World” that nobody’s ever been to before (only paying the title character about a second’s worth of mind). Quickly, Rick and Morty make their way to Sponge Dome, where a hoard of sponges are filing in, excited to find out what’s going on.
From there, they find Summer tied up in the back of their underwater craft, there’s a flashback to the cocaine era of the Bronx in the ’70s, and of course, incur a visit from DC and Marvel superheroes. All in all, about as bonkers as a regular Rick and Morty episode.
What other shows do you think Rick and Morty would cross over well with (or at least as well as this off-the-dome experiment went)? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
