Howdy, Wednesday Warriors! It’s that time of the week again—time to storm the gates and bring home a fresh stack of new comics. Before you head to the shop, arm yourself with a few recommendations, and for you big spenders out there, we also have a complete list of this week’s releases. This week is insane, as there are simply too many great comics. In addition to the books below, we highly recommend you pick up Punisher #2, The Revisionist #1, Godzilla: Oblivion #3, The Goddamned #4, and holy crap just get your butt to the comic shop. Well, this is it. The end of comic books. Mike Mignola is bringing his time with Hellboy to a close. It really feels like and ending for part of what makes comic books so special. Mignola is stepping away to focus on art—the non-sequential type—although the universe he created will no doubt live on. There will be more comics by great creators that feature Hellboy and his friends, but it’ll be different. Mignola’s ending is one decades in the making, and it’s been a hell of a ride. This issue does right by our giant red hero, and there’s little more we could ask for, even though it leaves us heartbroken and sad. When it comes to huge, epic comic book stories, Hellboy is the crown jewel. It’s a world of unspeakable horrors, life-or-death battles, and endless mysteries; it’s the perfect comic book. Hellboy in Hell #10 is the end of an era. It’s the end of one of comics’ most beautiful, damn near perfect runs. Thanks for everything, Mignola. Thanks for all the pancakes.

CIVIL WAR II #1

Civil War II #1 gets really heavy really fast. You think it’s giving you a slow-burn story and then it drops a freight train on your head. Things change so fast it’ll make your head spin, but that’s clearly the point. It moves and feels completely differently from the previous Civil War series and that’s a good thing. You’ll get no specific spoilers from us, but let’s just say that some key Marvel characters don’t survive the first issue. Brain Bendis works in his typical banter-infused style, giving every character a quip or comment. We’re Bendis fans around these parts, so any issue that his him cutting loose with superheroes is a win for us. It helps that this issue is drawn by David Marquez, too. Marquez was born to drawn Marvel Comics; he brings so much energy and excitement to every page, even the ones where characters are just standing around talking. This event is off to a great start and we’re pumped to see where it goes.

4001 A.D. #2

If you need your weekly science fiction fix, we’d suggest you check out 4001 A.D. #2. We told you the first issue was awesome and we meant it. The good news is the second issue is even more awesome. It’s awesome piloting a giant X-O suit and battling a city-sized dragon (the dragon actually is a city, but that’s getting ahead of ourselves). Matt Kindt and Clayton Crain continue to prove they are a comic book dream team with this epic. 4001 A.D is part of their Rai story, which was pure comic book magic, so any extra we get to spend in that world is a plus. Seriously, this is beyond your typical superhero floppy, it’s a huge space opera sorta comic that you have to check out. Not a regular reader? Not a problem. This series gives you everything you need to jump in, so no excuses. Jump in and read Kindt and Crain’s insanity, you’ve worked hard and earned it. Put your feet up and enjoy some space battles.
