The Power Rankings for Literary Monsters Are In

We here at Nerdist.com are ALL ABOUT Halloween. So much so that we portmanteau’d the ever-living crap out of the two words and have been celebrating #NERDOWEEN since October 1. The folks over at MorphCostumes have also been all about the holiday as well: with their infographic ranking the monsters across two dozen works of literature.

Gathered from both classic and contemporary literature, the infographic ranks the antagonists in the books against a “Scream Score” based on appearance, powers, and evil intent.

While most are spot on—like Pennywise from IT being quite possibly the scariest and most powerful of all the book’s baddies, or Cthulhu’s mere appearance meaning the world is pretty much done for—there are some with which I can’t help but disagree. Maybe that has to do with the lack of a competence rating.

Sure, The Grand High Witch is horrifying, evil, and powerful, but she was thwarted by a child turned mouse—a child who needed corrective lenses, at that. How bad can you be if you’re defeated by a mouse with an astigmatism? The Nazgul can be lumped into the easily defeated category as well for similar reasons. All powerful wraiths should be able to look under a stump for some hobbits. Adding in the reasons for their demise or how avoidable they are would certainly change some things on the infographic.

Also, ranking Killer Croc and the White Walkers on the same level just isn’t fair to the White Walkers. Killer Croc, although monstrously feral, still has some sort of mind and therefore can reason. White Walkers are relentless ice zombies—there’s no question their unstoppable force is more terrifying than a dude that hangs out in the sewers.
