The POWER RANGERS Get a New Ongoing Comic Book Series

Last month, the Power Rangers got a modern reboot on the big screen for their first motion picture in 20 years. But in the comic book realm, the Rangers are about to go back to basics with a brand new ongoing series from Boom! Studios.

Boom! Studios has revealed that the second Power Rangers comic will be called Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers, with writer Ryan Parrott and artist Dan Mora as the creative team. Unlike the current Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic, this series will follow the original team–Jason, Kimberly, Zack, Trini, and Billy–in the immediate aftermath of the first episode of the TV series. Think of it as Power Rangers: Year 1, as the newly formed team gets used to their powers and responsibilities while dealing with the usual drama of Angel Grove High School.

Above is Mora’s gorgeous first cover for the series–a really terrific rendition of the classic team, the first MegaZord, and of course, Rita Repulsa herself. Because of the time frame of this series, it seems unlikely that Tommy, the Green Ranger, will appear in a starring role. But the original five should be more than enough to carry the new stories.

“It’s hard enough being a teenager and juggling relationships, school, and family—I can’t even imagine throwing in protecting the world,” Parrott said. “The goal of Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers is to focus on more personal, intimate character stories. We dive deeper to fully examine the wish-fulfilling, awesomeness of having superpowers, along with the pressure of that responsibility.”
