The POKÉMON SUN and MOON Soundtrack Is Now Available on iTunes

My cousin and I are both longtime Pokémon players, since the first generation of games (second for him), so I was surprised when he told me recently that he doesn’t remember the music of those games, because he was always forced by annoyed parents to play them with the volume all the way down. As much as the straightforward linear gameplay, variety of monsters, and colorful characters and settings are a part of Pokémon‘s identity, so too is its music.

With its tropical theme, the sounds of Pokémon Sun and Moon are decidedly a departure from the music of the rest of the series. That doesn’t mean that it’s no good, just that it has a different type of appeal. Regardless of your feelings about it, you’re now free to download the games’ music as a digital album, titled Pokémon Sun & Pokémon Moon: Super Music Collection, from iTunes.

Seeing the tracklist is also a reminder of just how much music goes into a video game: the Super Music Collection consists of a whopping 169 tracks, ranging from jingles that last a few seconds to full-fledged compositions that run for a few minutes. It’d cost $167 to get the tracks individually, so thank goodness you can grab the whole thing for just $9.99.

This soundtrack has the potential to sell at least a few copies, considering that, despite the high standards the series has set with its past successes, Sun and Moon are the fastest-selling Nintendo games ever in Europe and the Americas: Since their launch of November 18, both titles have sold a combined 3.7 million units in the Americas, while they sold 1.5 million copies in Europe during their first week (via The Verge).
