The Pixies New “Tenement Song” Gets a Surreal and Dark Animated Video

Dark. Weird. Wonderful.

That could easily describe the world most days, but it can also describe what it’s like sometimes to live in a big city apartment building full of strange and sometimes scary characters. It is even an appropriate way to try and sum up the Pixies. So it’s only fitting that description is apt for the band’s new video for their latest track, “Tenement Song,” which takes a twisted and surreal look at the world of shared urban living.

This animated video, made by Neirin Best, Lianne Pierce, and Xavier Burrow of Krank! Collective, follows a rat as he traverses a sprawling apartment building, coming across violent gamblers, strutting pimps, drug addicts, neglected (creepy) babies, a crazy cat lady who seems to be taunting her feline friend with a lot of fish, and lots of other strange people and places, before the whole thing comes crashing down on him in a controlled explosion.

We first came across this new video over at Vulture, and this is the third song released by the band off of their upcoming new album, Head Carrier (listed as track seven of 12). The first two songs, “Um Chagga Lagga” and “Talent,” did not have official videos, making this the album’s first.

You can pre-order Head Carrier, their sixth full studio album (and first since 2014’s Indie City), which comes out at the end of the month on September 30th, through the band’s site.
